Director of National Intelligence (DNI) Tulsi Gabbard has released a trove of declassified documents which, according to her, provide “overwhelming evidence” of a coordinated effort by the Obama administration to manipulate intelligence and undermine President Donald Trump’s first term.
Gabbard unveiled more than 100 pages of emails, memos and internal communications demonstrating a deliberate attempt by senior Obama-era officials to politicize intelligence and initiate the multi-year Trump-Russia collusion investigation. She described the actions as “a treasonous conspiracy to subvert the will of the American people.” (Related: Mark Levin: Trump-Russia collusion hoax ‘executed by the Obama administration’.)
One of the key pieces of evidence is a draft President’s Daily Brief dated Dec. 8, 2016, which stated that Russia “did not impact recent U.S. election results” through cyberattacks. This report, prepared by several U.S. intelligence agencies, found no evidence of voting interference. However, Gabbard said this document was suppressed and replaced with a new intelligence assessment released on Jan. 6, 2017, which claimed Russia had intervened in the election to help Trump.
The revised assessment relied heavily on the discredited Steele Dossier and sidelined dissenting views within the intelligence community. “This was not intelligence gathering,” she stated. “It was narrative building.”
The DNI forwarded the documents to the Department of Justice (DOJ). Gabbard likewise urged investigations into former Central Intelligence Agency Director John Brennan and former Federal Bureau of Investigation Director James Comey.
Democrats have vehemently pushed back against Gabbard’s claims. Rep. Jim Hines (D-CT), ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee, dismissed the DNI’s accusation of treason as “baseless.”
He pointed to a report by the Republican-led Senate Intelligence Committee which concluded that Russia conducted probing operations of election systems and conducted influence operations to change public opinion. However, the GOP report found no evidence that Moscow’s hackers attempted to change votes.
Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA), ranking member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, criticized Gabbard’s report. According to him, it compared two different things: Russian attempts to hack into voting systems and Russian influence operations meant to sway public opinion. “This is one more example of the director of national intelligence trying to cook the books,” Warner said.
The DOJ declined to comment on Gabbard’s statements. Meanwhile, the Obama-era officials named in the report have not yet responded to requests for comment. Her release of the documents implicating the Obama administration has reignited the debate over the 2016 election and the role of intelligence in shaping public perception.
As the political fallout continues, the question remains: Will these allegations lead to a deeper understanding of the events of 2016, or will they further polarize an already divided nation?
