Newly appointed Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Brendan Carr has vowed to end the “censorship cartel” of Big Tech companies threatening free speech online.
In a recent interview on Fox News‘ “Sunday Morning Futures,” the 45-year-old Republican commissioner revealed that the independent agency should “restore Americans’ right to free speech.” He vowed to dismantle the “censorship cartel” of Big Tech companies. “Combating tech censorship is going to be one of the top priorities for me,” Carr told host Maria Bartiromo. “Facebook and other companies, have been part of a censorship cartel that has worked with advertisers. They have worked with government officials to censor the free speech rights of everyday Americans. That’s got to end because censorship isn’t just about stopping words. It’s about stopping ideas. America is a country of founders, of people that have pushed boundaries, pushed frontiers.”
The incoming FCC chairman also asserted that innovation and prosperity are linked to the free exchange of ideas. He warned the public of the economic and cultural consequences of suppressing free speech. “America is a country of founders, of people that have pushed boundaries, pushed frontiers. They’ve innovated and when you silence speech, you silence ideas and we unleash America’s prosperity again.”
Moreover, Carr claimed that there is a tie between the fight against censorship and broader political movements.
“That’s why you feel this vibe-shifting in the country where people know President Trump is about to lead another great American comeback because this wet blanket of government control is going away and our economy is going to flourish again,” he said.
In line with this, Carr sent a letter addressed to the CEOs of tech giants on Nov. 13, days before Trump revealed his promotion from senior Republican commissioner to permanent chairman of the FCC.
The letter was sent to Google’s Sundar Pichai, Microsoft’s Satya Nadella, Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg and Apple’s Tim Cook to seek clarity on their associations with NewsGuard, a controversial for-profit “fact-checking” media rating firm and their broader involvement in content moderation practices.
“Facebook, Google, Apple, Microsoft and others have played central roles in the censorship cartel,” Carr wrote in an X post on Nov. 15 alongside the letter. “The Orwellian named NewsGuard along with ‘fact-checking’ groups and ad agencies helped enforce one-sided narratives.”
Carr, whom Trump hailed as a “warrior for free speech” while announcing his promotion to FCC chairman, called for Big Tech companies to disclose their use of NewsGuard services and similar fact-checking entities. The correspondence, which asked for a response by Dec. 10, stressed the potential implications of Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, which grants liability protections to online platforms acting “in good faith.”
